What does the “Horn Hand” Mean?
The Horn Hand gesture is commonly seen at Rock Concerts but it has a variety of meanings and uses in various cultures.
It earliest use can be seen in India which is synonymous of expulsion of demons and negative thoughts. In many mediterranean and Latin countries this sign implies cuckoldry. In fact the common word in Spain is “Cornudo” – cuckolded.
In the Heavy Metal Culture, Ronnie James Dio in 1979 who sang with Black Sabbath and Rainbow was partly responsible for it becoming a common symbol among metal music fans.
Also, in the 1960s, Jinx Dawson was seen using it too but it really took off from Dio.
It has different meanings, depending on context and position of fingers:
– For Dio, it was a superstitious way to ward off evil
– At heavy metal gigs, fans use it to show their appreciation
– For Texans like George W Bush, it is a show of support for the state university
– In American sign language it means ‘I love you’
If you want to use it on Facebook or another social network, just type: \m/ or |m| always being careful depending on the context.
